The goals of pelvic stabilization in pelvic trauma are:

  • Prevent additional vascular and tissue injury from fracture fragment movement
  • Decrease pelvic volume to tamponade bleeding vessels and bones; prevent further hemorrhage
  • Pain management

A pelvic binder is wrapped circumferentially around the pelvis. Internal rotation of the legs, if intact, will reduce the volume of the pelvic cavity and can significantly improve the clinical condition of the patient. As seen in Figure 4, the feet can be taped together to stabilize a pelvic fracture.
